Born to Fly 04:07
He wakes up to cry while the doves are still mourning he wakes up to cry while the tears keep falling with pain Then the sun comes up and it kisses his face like she used to do some mornings in June- but just a few He wakes up to try, while the doves are still mourning her fate He wakes up to try just one more morning to say I’ll get by, yes I will lord knows ill die trying He wakes up to die, but it’s not that morning it’s said So he goes to bed that night and dreams he’s with her again them the moon came out and it shone on his face like a Halloween eve them dancing on graves He was born to cry, a child in mourning, they say But he was born to fly, her bird forever one day

about

The welcoming, wide-grinning visage that greets the listener upon arrival to the cover of Benjamin Teague's new 45 of solo instrumentals betrays the music within - this is warm mountain music, made by an obviously studied craftsman of the genre.

The A side gives us two tunes on the mandolin. "For Her, Far Away" has a wistful melody that will immediately have you missing someone, or something. "Can't Stop Kate" is lively, suggesting steep mountain roads, and heat from the sun settling over tall grass fields in the late afternoon.

Side B is represented by one tune on guitar; "Thief in the Night" has a melody that will stick with you well after the needle lifts off the record.

Teague's nimble fretwork on either instrument displays a technical proficiency to be sure, but there's no hotdogging (which can sometimes be attendant to the genre) here; these songs, all penned by Teague, are steeped in the soul, spirit and tradition of the mountain music he so obviously loves. He's not wasting any time, either - the longest tune here clocks in at just under two minutes. But the melodies will get you just the same - sounding old and familiar, while undeniably new.
